Work is driving me nuts with all this Corona virus stuff. We are constantly getting mixed messages - first we’re getting closed, then we’re open. Now all our sister organizations are completely, 100% closing, but we’re not . W e were told we could s elf-quarantine if we’re not comfortable coming in, then that was rescinded . We have a lot of people who travel, although most of that has been canceled, but we still have people filtering back in from recent trips . F irst they were sending them home, but then they let certain people stay , then sent some people home but called others back in. Yesterday afternoon we were told to submit 4 weeks worth of time sheets with anticipated hours we’d be teleworking (even though we can’t actually telework due to the nature of the work ) . Today we’re told never mind , just do time cards normally. This afternoon we got guidance from up high that we should avoid meetings & groups of 5 or more people. I work in a cube farm with 12.
Just make up your minds, either send me home or make me and everyone else come in so I can catch the damn thing and live or die already. I don’t even care what the outcome is so much as I’d just like a damn decision .
Meanwhile, Mrs. Snuze is home writing a book report. B to the S.

I would really hate to be in a management role just about anywhere right now. Sounds hella stressful and shit usually only rolls downhill when it comes to conflicting decisions. I have to only imagine things will get better though since this isnt ebola or smallpox so most people wont die. Society shouldnt collapse so people will figure this crap out. Way too many people will still die and even more will get infected, but such is life I suppose.

Sorry to hear your management is filled with a bunch of blow hards, that can’t seem to put themselves in their employee’s shoes .
The first thing I learned as a manager, keep your people informed and make them feel safe and secure in their role. If people need to be let go, do it quickly and with confidence, while being as compassionate as possible. People should be given quite a bit of latitude during times like these.

Indeed, it's been stressful, especially while leading at a start-up.

Good luck!
The other thing is I’m in a situation where I’m working on a project with another guy and he is at home taking care of a sick kid (just a cold) but also has a pregnant wife, so he’s concerned with not getting her sick, which is very valid. But it also means my work is more or less at a stand still.

Same. I generally hate management roles, so I feel for those people, but I also recognize that when you choose to be a manager you have to step up to the plate and make decisions, often times unpopular ones. And this is a time when people need to rise to the occasion.
My immediate management for the most part has been really good, it’s the higher ups that are giving us hell.

That’s good advice. My direct management so far has been pretty good, it’s the higher ups that are a pain in the ass.

if I had to guess, it’s because there is a generation of folks running compani es who are not comfortable with group chats or remote conferences as a method for problem solving. They just deeply desire to all get in a room together and hash things out. But they cant, so instead its all just being handled haphazardly.

It is. Plus we are a franchisee, so we are dealing with the franchisor as well. Every local govt is doing something different and we are just trying to hold things together so the business doesn’t completely tank (although about 50 restaurants are mainly dine-in oriented, so that business likely will never recover). The good thing is all senior mgmt is forgoing 2019 bonuses (which were to have been paid this month) so we can use that money to help pay hourly employees who can’t work, and not a single person has complained.

Cheers to you to, and thanks!
I’ m a bit worried about my wife, she’s immuno-compromised, which is why she’s staying home. I’m just hoping I don’t bring it home to her.

Society already collapsed, we just haven’t figured it out yet. Experts are saying we may have to live locked down and isolated for 1-2 years, until a vaccine can get through the lengthy approval process, get into mass production, and be administered on a global scale. We will not be able to live like this for that long, bottom line. By the end of it, we’ll have 15 0+million homeless and jobless people out on the street and social order will have completely broken down.

That wouldnt make sense unless this was more deadly. We would be better off just letting people die at that point. If this doesnt resolve things in a few weeks or so, theres no way it will continue, people will just go back to work.

You say that, but look at what doctors and scientists are saying. The political leaders, Democrat and Republican alike, are saying 2-4 weeks, experts are saying a year or more. After that long, I question what we’re really trying to save anyway, since "being alive" and "living" are not necessarily the same thing. Personally, if this lasts more than a few weeks, I am perfectly comfortable taking my chances and going back to normal, but it isn't up to me, it's up to our leaders, and I doubt they would share that sentiment.

Either way, society isnt going to simply collapse. Only way that happens is if this somehow sparks world war 3. But things are already turning around in China where this all started so it doesnt seem like the world is ending to me. Sure it will continue to get worse for now but thats why we need to hunker down for a bit and ride it out.

All the articles I’m seeing are indicating that China is likely to see a reoccurrence as soon as their controls are lifted, since the virus is still out there and people will just start being infected again once quarantining ends, so we have to keep this up until there’s a proven cure or vaccine, or else, many elderly and chronically ill people will continue to die.

I think that’s a very sensible answer, but I work for the government, so you can take all that logic and reason and throw it right out the window. Seriously, though, you’re probably right.
